Spectacularly situated where the mountains meet the ocean, Campbell River
overlooks the Inside Passage and Discovery Islands to the east and is
backed by the alpine wilderness of Strathcona Provincial Park in the west.
A year-round mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, this vibrant city of 29,000
people offers some of the finest ecotour experiences on Vancouver Island.
The numerous
parks, lakes and wilderness areas surrounding Campbell River present
canoeists, hikers, anglers and wildlife-watchers with many opportunities.
Strathcona Provincial Park, just 59 km away, is a glorious, 231,434-hectare
park with mountains, glaciers, old growth forests, meadows, alpine
lake, and hundreds of plant and animal species.
In the
winter and early spring, Campbell River diving is at its peak, with
visibility in the clear, cold water often exceeding 31 meters. An
incredible amount of marine plant and animal life inhabits the Discovery
Passage. Diving hot spots include Seymour Narrows, Steep Island and
the sunken destroyer, HMCS Columbia. Because some of the most popular
dive sites are subject to powerful tidal currents and must be entered
only at slack tides, expert-led dive charters are strongly recommended.
Then
there's the fantastic fishing! Campbell River has been know as the
Salmon Capital of the World for more than 100 years. Chinook salmon
can be caught year-round; other salmon species can be found from June
into the fall. Fishing for steelhead, the finest freshwater game fish
in North America, is at its best in winter and early spring.
